About TIC in the White River valley
Trout in the Classroom is an environmental education program in which students raise brook trout from eggs before releasing them in a state-approved stream.
The Greater Upper Valley Chapter of Trout Unlimited (GUVTU) and White River Partnership (WRP) work together to coordinate Trout in the Classroom (TIC) with interested White River valley schools each year (see White River valley map here).
The Vermont Institute of Natural Science (VINS) is the lead facilitator of the TIC program in Vermont, coordinating an in-person TIC Annual Workshop and ongoing programmatic support throughout the year.
TIC calendar
The TIC program runs annually from October through June. Key dates include:
- October: WRP drops-off (new participants) or inventories (returning participants) TIC equipment
- November: VINS leads an in-person training for all participants
- December: Teachers and students set-up their TIC equipment and supplies
- January: WRP and GUVTU drop-off 100 brook trout eggs to each TIC aquarium
- January – May: Teachers and students maintain a healthy ecosystem for brook trout
- May – June: Teachers and students release brook trout in a state-approved stream
- June: Teachers clean/store equipment and share data
Follow this link for the full TIC calendar.

We ask that each participating White River valley school commits to providing annual funding support – approximately $100/year – to cover the cost of TIC supplies (see TIC supplies list here).
For returning schools, the WRP will purchase the annual TIC supplies on your behalf and deliver the supplies along with an invoice.

Cast your vote 2025
We invite current WRP Members to cast their vote for 3 open Board seats by Sunday, September 7 at noon.
Step 1: Read the 2025 Board candidate bios below
Lisa Gwiazda – My love affair with the White River began in the 90s, spending time with my family at Paine’s Beach and annual camping trips in Gaysville. I changed careers from nursing to property management upon moving to Vermont permanently. We now live on the White River and enjoy all it has to offer. I love being outdoors and appreciate and understand the importance of relationship and reciprocity with the natural world. I enjoy serving on the WRP Board. My admiration and respect for WRP has increased, as well as understanding the importance and necessity of organizations like WRP.
Steve Mortillo – I reside in Tunbridge, alongside my family, close to the First Branch of the White River. After serving in the Army in Iraq, I pursued my passion for the environment and graduated from the University of Vermont with a B.S. in Environmental Science focusing on water resources. Over the past six years, I have served as the Natural Resources Program Lead for the national parks in Vermont and New Hampshire where I work to conserve the forests and waterways of these vital ecosystems. A lifelong angler, I enjoy exploring Vermont’s waterways and am committed to preserving these areas for future generations.
Dave Phillips – I live in Sharon on Quation Brook, which is in the White River watershed. I have been on the WRP Board since 2009 and am currently serving as the Board Treasurer. I am passionate about our environment and the Partnership gives me the opportunity to help give a little back to both the environment and our community. I look forward to serving for another term.
Step 2: Then follow this link to cast your vote via a Monday.com form.
If you have any questions, please contact Mary Russ: mary[at]whiteriverpartnership.org.
